None of the Above i.e., NOTA has been provided as an option to the voters of India in most elections since 2009. The vote does not hold any electoral value which means that even if a majority of votes are cast for NOTA, the candidate with the second most majority vote would be declared as the winner. A voter may decide not to support any of the candidates contesting the elections by indicating that they prefer none of the aforementioned options. It gives an option to the voters to reject all the candidates in the electorate if they do not seem fit. This even though looks as a plebeian is a step to strengthen the democracy and giving a choice to the voters. But the option of NOTA is very raw right now. It is a toothless tiger at the moment. In addition to giving citizens the ability to reject political parties or candidates on the voter list, NOTA disappoints voters by failing to address their discontent. The introduction of the NOTA button in the Electronic Voting Machines is definitely a positive step in election processing in India. But it is the need of the hour to add more ‘weightage’ to NOTA. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to every area in which NOTA falls short. Due to its restricted implementation, the NOTA option is unable to offer a practical solution to the ongoing election issue. This article will examine each of these gaps and provide a conclusion.
